Civil engineers can be divided into many fields such as geotechnical, structural, environmental, transportation and construction, residential, commercial, industrial engineering etc Structural engineering- It is concerned with the structural design and structural analysis of buildings, bridges, towers, flyovers (overpasses), tunnels, off shore structures like oil and gas fields in the sea, aerostructure and other structures. Earthquake engineering - it involves designing structures to withstand dangerous earthquake exposures. Earthquake engineering is a sub-discipline of structural engineering. Transportation engineering - It is concerned with moving people and goods efficiently, safely, and in a manner conducive to a vibrant community. This involves specifying, designing, constructing, and maintaining transportation infrastructure which includes streets, canals, highways, rail systems, airports, ports, and mass transit. Coastal engineering – it is all about managing and dealing with the coastal areas. Construction engineering – it involves planning and execution, transportation of materials, site development based on hydraulic, environmental, structural and geotechnical engineering. Environmental engineering - It deals with treatment of chemical, biological, or thermal wastes, purification of water and air, and remediation of contaminated sites after waste disposal or accidental contamination. Forensic engineering - It help in the investigation of materials, products, structures or components that fail or do not operate as intended, hence causing personal injury or damage to property. This field also deals with retracing processes and procedures leading to accidents in operation of vehicles or machinery. Civil engineering is known as the second oldest engineering discipline after military engineering. It has a lot to do with the public sector like municipal public works department, federal government agencies, and the private sector.
